Work Shop 4
Andrea Brustolon. The Sculptor's Utensils.

A practical and theoretical work shop for first to fifth year classes of elementary school, plus first year classes of secondary school. This work shop was created and is held by Paola Nard.

Duration : 90 minutes

In his work shop, Brustolon used diverse kinds of wood, each with their own characteristics and great care was taken to use the exact type of wood necessary for specific works. Among these were the prestigious ebony and boxwood plus the more humble birch and walnut which were easily obtainable in this area. Before being used the pieces of wood were transformed and underwent special treatment. The wood was cut from the tree only during precise periods and furthermore the tree truck was cut to exact lengths and without wood gnarls. These chosen blocks of wood were then left to “settle and mature” for a period of time necessary for them to become pliable, thus enabling the maestro to later transform the blocks of wood into the works of art they had been selected for. The blocks of wood which were ready to be sculpted, were transported along the Piave River to Venice, where the maestro would then assemble them to create his works of art. When the pieces of wood were ready Brustolon would commence work at his work shop using specific utensils and instruments.

This laboratory, which has been created especially for the exhibition, has a practical approach which aims at showing visitors the different types and qualities of wood and the diverse instruments and utensils that Brustolon and his workers used in his work shop. Visitors, firsthand will be able to touch the different kinds of wood, have a go at engraving and carving, thus experiencing how the sculptor must have actually used his instruments. The laboratory takes place within the exhibition rooms of the building Palazzo Crepadona. The cost of the laboratory includes all the various materials that visitors might require and utilize. The laboratory also takes into consideration the various ages groups, concentration, learning capacities and requirements of each class and then adapts accordingly.
